The Bad Boy and Girl and the Hot Mess Are All In, and That's Great News

Image
The Bad Couple signifies that All In is for real Photo Credit: Scott Finkelstein All In, Cody Rhodes' and the Young Bucks' attempt at drawing 10,000 people to a non-WWE wrestling show, added three new names to the talent roster, and all of them are eye-opening. The first two are a package deal, the Bad Boy himself Joey Janela and his partner in and out of the ring, Penelope Ford. The third is former Impact Wrestling star and Tough Enough alumna Chelsea Green. They may not be the biggest names in wrestling, although Janela has been the darling of WrestleMania weekend the last two years with his Spring Break cards, but they signal more of a daring direction for All In than any of the names previously announced, even the heavy hitters like Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada. All In looked like it was going to be a standard Ring of Honor featuring the stars of New Japan Pro Wrestling show with a few adjacent additions actually up until about a month ago. Stephen Amell and Tessa Blanch...

The 2017 TWB 100 Epilogue: My Ballot

Image
Dakota Kai was one of my votes who didn't make the list this year Photo Credit: WWE.com Another TWB 100 is in the books, and despite the lower voter turnout, I consider it a success. Honestly, I don't care if ten or 10,000 people vote; the point is to get people thinking about the wrestling they watch in a critical manner. I feel like the fact that nearly 75 percent of ballots had 100 wrestlers on them and the width and breadth of wrestlers voted for is as much a signpost for success as the number of voters. Anyway, I shall close the festivities this year as I do most years, with my own ballot, with blurbs of varying lengths for wrestlers that did not appear on the final list: 1. Johnny Gargano 2. Zack Sabre, Jr. 3. Jimmy Uso 4. Jey Uso 5. Braun Strowman 6. AJ Styles 7. Cesaro 8. Sheamus 9. Tomohiro Ishii - I didn't watch as much non-WWE wrestling as I would have liked in 2017 for various reasons. I'm not going to get into them, because most are deeply personal, but bec...

Hold Onto Your Butts: Joey Janela Booked Himself against GREAT SASUKE for Spring Break II

Image
The Bad Boy gonna tangle with a Japanese legend as crazy as he is Photo Credit: Scott Finkeltein Last year, WrestleMania weekend's highlight show was undoubtedly Joey Janela's Spring Break. The combination of violence, manic wackiness, comedy, and nostalgia made it a huge success, at least critically. And it was enough of a monetary success that it's getting a sequel this year. While Matt Riddle (who is also promoting a show Mania weekend called Bloodsport, which has a lot of people excited for different reasons) and Dan Severn headlined the show, Janela wrestled his own personal dream match against Marty Jannetty on the second match from the top in what I can only call the greatest self-aware contest of all-time. This year, his opponent is just as crazy, mythical, and huge, but for different reasons: International Dream Match. Friday. April 6 2018. 1155pm. Live from New Orleans. @GCWrestling_ presents: Joey Janelas Spring Break II #JJSB2 https://t.co/hdclxJ1ZHD pic.twit...

The 2017 TWB 100: Meet Your Voters and Others Receiving Votes

Image
Darby Allin *just* missed the cut this year Photo Credit: Scott Finkelstein Hello, friends, and welcome to the rollout of the TWB 100 for the calendar year of 2017. The votes have been received and tabulated, and now the fun part begins. I will begin unveiling the list tomorrow, but first, why don't you sit back and meet the people responsible for putting this thing together, okay? While the voter count was down this year I received 23 ballots, down from 66 last year (yikes) the stock and quality of voters remained at high levels. Additionally, out of 23 voters, 15 submitted the full 100, which is an astounding percentage. To all who voted, pat yourselves on the back, for now you will be made known to the world. If you have any issues with this year's TWB 100, the people you'd take it up with are the voters, but if you have any problems and you wanna bother my pure, sweet Large Adult Sons and Daughters, please don't. They voted. You didn't. Anyway... TH - Pokm...

The Wrestling Blog's OFFICIAL Best in the World Rankings for January 8, 2018

Image
Let's see how long this lasts Screenshot credit: WWE.com Welcome to a feature I like to call "Best in the World" rankings. They're not traditional power rankings per se, but they're rankings to see who is really the best in the world, a term bandied about like it's bottled water or something else really common. They're rankings decided by me, and don't you dare call them arbitrary lest I smack the taste out of your mouth. Without further ado, here's this week's list: 1. Asuka (Last Poll: 4) - Asuka's partner for the Mixed Match Classic was announced today, The Miz. In addition to being the favorite team to win just because of how destruction and cheating form such a formidable duo, the possibility exists that at some point, Asuka will kick Miz's head clean off his shoulders for no other reason than she can, which is always primo. 2. Joey Janela (Last Poll: Not Ranked) - Missed in TWB's winter break was the first wrestling match o...

Promotions to Watch: Game Changer Wrestling

Image
Janela's a huge reason to follow Game Changer Wrestling Photo Credit: Scott Finkelstein Death match wrestling is a mixed bag. Some people love it and can't get enough of the ultraviolence, while others cringe at the mere thought of things they've heard people do in those kinds of matches. The truth is death match promotions aren't just places for light tubes and barbed wire anymore. Sure, they have a lot of that kinda stuff going on, but they've basically become havens for all different kinds of wrestlers, mainly brawlers who aren't going to show up on the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Best Technical ballot. Then again, sometimes, you will see the prestige grapplers showing up. I mean, Jonathan Gresham is a proud Combat Zone Wrestling alumnus. CZW is the stateside promotion most people think of when it comes to the new generation of extreme, but a new kid has come up on the block a few counties north in the state of New Jersey. Game Changer Wrestling has looked ...

Pick Three: HOSS HOSS HOSS, Being the Elite, Beyond's Cold Brew

Image
Keith Lee gonna toss Joey Janela around like a ragdoll Sunday Photo Credit: Scott Finkelstein It's the weekend, baby! You know what that means, time to drink precisely one beer and dial 911  wrestling is happening, and it's happening all around this great world. I'm going to highlight three shows which I think will be of most interest. Of course, I'm only one person. You can check out which shows are coming up possibly in your area via Cagematch . Anyway, go to, if you can, these great shows that may be happening in your area, on television/YouTube/streaming, or for later consumption via VOD, DVD, or whatever other means one uses to consume wrestling at a later date: Hardcore Hustle Organization HOSS Tournament Tonight (Friday, 12/8), Old Time Wrestling Arena, Williamstown, NJ, 8 PM local time - Are you tired of flippy shit and smol beans clogging up your rings? Do you have a craving for some beef? Do you wanna see big dudes, fat guys, muscle heads, and strong-ass lad...
